AI visibility tracking: how to measure brand mentions in AI answers

Updated ยท By the SEOAmazing team

AI visibility tracking measures how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity mention your brand or cite your site when people ask questions in your market. You pick a fixed set of buyer questions, run them on a schedule, record mentions, citations and competitors named, and judge the trend rather than single answers.

Why track visibility in AI answers?

People now ask assistants the same questions they used to type into a search box: which tool should I use, what does this cost, who is the best option near me. The answer often names a few brands and links a few sources. If you are not in that answer, the buyer may never see you.

Rank trackers and Search Console do not show this. An AI answer has no position one through ten, and many assistants do not report impressions to site owners. To know where you stand, you have to ask the questions yourself and record what comes back.

How to choose the prompts to track

Your prompt set is the foundation. A poor set gives you numbers that look precise but mean little. Aim for questions a real buyer would ask before they know your name.

  1. Start with category questions: what is the best tool for a job, which options exist, how to solve a problem.
  2. Add comparison questions: your brand versus a named competitor, and alternatives to a competitor.
  3. Add brand questions: what is your brand, is it any good, how much does it cost. These show how assistants describe you.
  4. Pull wording from real sources: sales calls, support tickets, forum threads and the question-style queries in Google Search Console.
  5. Keep each prompt neutral. Do not include your brand name in category questions, or you will measure your own prompt, not the assistant.
  6. Start with 20 to 50 prompts and keep the wording fixed, so changes in results reflect the engines, not your edits.

Mentions vs citations: what to record

Record two things separately for every answer. A mention is when the assistant names your brand in its text. A citation is when it links to a page on your domain as a source. They move for different reasons.

Mentions reflect how the web describes you: reviews, comparisons, press and forum posts. Citations reflect whether your own pages are crawlable, relevant and quotable for that question. A brand can be mentioned often but cited rarely, which usually points to a content or crawl access problem on its own site.

  • Mentioned: yes or no, and where in the answer (first, among several, or last).
  • Cited: yes or no, and which URL was linked.
  • Competitors: which other brands were named or cited.
  • Accuracy: whether the description of your product, pricing or features was correct.

How to calculate AI share of voice

Share of voice compares your presence with your competitors across the same prompt set. A simple version: count the answers that mention your brand, then divide by the total brand mentions across you and the competitors you track. Do the same for citations.

Calculate it per engine as well as overall. It is common to appear often in one assistant and rarely in another, because each uses different retrieval sources and crawlers. A per-engine view tells you where to focus.

Why AI answers vary, and how to handle it

Ask the same assistant the same question twice and you may get two different answers. Generation has randomness built in, retrieval results shift as indexes update, and engines change models without notice. Answers can also differ by location, account settings and whether web search was used.

So treat any single answer as one sample. Run each prompt repeatedly on a schedule, keep the wording and settings constant, and look at rates over weeks: the share of runs in which you were mentioned or cited. A change from 2 of 10 runs to 6 of 10 is a signal. A change in one run is noise.

What to do with AI visibility results

The data is only useful if it leads to changes. Match the pattern you see to a likely cause.

  • Never mentioned on category prompts: you lack third-party coverage. Earn reviews, comparisons and listings on sites in your space.
  • Mentioned but not cited: your pages may be hard to reach or quote. Check robots.txt for search bots, serve content in the initial HTML, and add clear answers and specific facts.
  • Described wrongly: fix the facts on your own site first, then on profiles and directories, and keep them consistent.
  • A competitor dominates one engine: read which of their pages that engine cites, and see what those pages offer that yours do not.
  • Cited for the wrong page: improve the page you want cited and link to it from the page that is being cited.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity mention your brand or cite your website when answering questions related to your business. It is measured by running a fixed set of prompts and recording mentions, citations and competitors in each answer.

How many prompts should I track?

Start with 20 to 50 prompts that cover category, comparison and brand questions. That is enough to see patterns without becoming hard to review. Keep the wording fixed so that changes in results come from the engines, not from your edits.

Why do I get different answers each time I ask?

AI assistants generate text with some randomness, their retrieval results change as indexes update, and providers update models. Location and settings can also matter. Run each prompt several times on a schedule and track the rate of mentions and citations over weeks.

What is the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention is when an AI answer names your brand in its text. A citation is when the answer links to a page on your site as a source. Mentions are driven by how the wider web describes you, while citations depend on your own pages being reachable and relevant.

Can I improve my AI visibility?

Often, yes, though no one can guarantee results. Allow AI search crawlers in robots.txt, serve content in plain HTML, state clear facts about your brand, publish specific and original information, and earn mentions on third-party sites. Then track whether mention and citation rates change.
