Answer engine optimization (AEO): how to become the answer

Updated ยท By the SEOAmazing team

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search features and assistants can lift a direct answer from your page. It targets Google featured snippets, People also ask, AI Overviews and voice results. The core method: phrase headings as real questions, answer each in 40 to 60 words, then add detail.

What is answer engine optimization?

Classic SEO aims for a blue link that someone clicks. Answer engine optimization aims for the answer itself: the box at the top of Google, the expanded question in People also ask, the sentence an AI summary quotes, or the reply a voice assistant reads aloud.

These features share one job. They take a question and return a short, self-contained answer, usually with a link to the source. Your page wins when it holds the clearest, best-supported answer to that exact question, written in a form a machine can lift without rewriting.

AEO is not a separate discipline from SEO. A page still has to be crawlable, indexed and trusted to be chosen. AEO is the layer on top: how you phrase, order and format the content so the answer is easy to find and easy to quote.

How do answer engines pick an answer?

Google says plainly that you cannot request a featured snippet. Its systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a given search. In practice, the candidates are pages that already rank well for the query, so normal ranking work comes first.

Among those candidates, the page that answers the question directly, near a heading that matches the question, tends to win. Featured snippets reverse the usual result format: the answer text shows first and the link second. The same answers can appear inside the People also ask group of related questions.

Google's AI Overviews follow the same base rules. Google states there are no extra requirements and no special schema needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to be used as a supporting link. Inclusion is never guaranteed.

  • Featured snippet: one extracted answer above the regular results.
  • People also ask: a list of related questions, each expanding to a short answer and source link.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode: a generated summary with links to supporting pages.
  • Voice assistants: usually read a single answer aloud, so only the top answer counts.

How to structure a page so it can be quoted

Think of every section as a question and answer pair. The heading states the question. The first paragraph answers it in plain words. Everything after that is supporting detail for readers who want more.

  1. Collect the real questions people ask. Use People also ask boxes, your site search, support tickets and the question-style queries in Google Search Console.
  2. Make each important question an H2 or H3, worded the way a searcher would type it.
  3. Answer in the first 40 to 60 words under the heading. Lead with the answer, not the background. The paragraph should still make sense if it is copied alone.
  4. Use a numbered list for steps and processes, a bulleted list for options, and a table for comparisons with several attributes.
  5. Define terms in one sentence using the pattern: X is a Y that does Z.
  6. Keep facts specific and current: dates, numbers, names. Vague answers lose to precise ones.
  7. Add one clear H1, a descriptive title tag and a meta description that restate the main question.

Does FAQ or HowTo schema still help?

Structured data used to unlock visible FAQ and HowTo rich results for almost any site. Google changed that in August 2023. FAQ rich results are now shown mainly for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. HowTo rich results were first limited to desktop, and in September 2023 Google announced it would drop the HowTo search appearance entirely.

Google also said you do not have to remove existing markup. Unused structured data does not cause problems for Search. It simply has no visible effect there.

So why keep it? Schema still describes your page to machines in a clear, standard format. It tells crawlers which text is a question, which is an answer, who published the page and when. That context can help any system that reads markup. Google's own advice applies: structured data should match the visible text on the page. Never mark up questions and answers that a visitor cannot see.

How to measure answer engine optimization

Rank position alone hides AEO results. A page can sit at position three and still own the answer box, or rank first while a competitor's answer fills People also ask. Track answer ownership directly.

  • Answer box ownership: whether your page is the featured snippet for each target query.
  • People also ask presence: how many of the expanded answers link to your site.
  • Question-style queries in Search Console: impressions and clicks on queries that start with who, what, how, why or can.
  • Click-through rate changes after you rewrite an answer, since a snippet can raise or lower clicks.

Tracking answer ownership with SEOAmazing

SEOAmazing's rank tracking records, for each keyword you add, your Google position along with whether you own the answer box and how many People also ask answers link to you. If you connect Google Search Console (optional and read-only), it lists your question-style queries and lets you track any of them in one click.

On the page side, SEOAmazing's crawler flags missing or weak titles, meta descriptions, headings and structured data, and AI drafts fixes you review. Nothing changes until you approve it. That pairing lets you rewrite an answer, then watch whether the answer box follows.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO works to rank a page in search results so people click it. AEO works to make a page the source of a direct answer, such as a featured snippet, a People also ask answer, an AI Overview citation or a voice reply. AEO builds on SEO, because answer features usually draw from pages that already rank.

How long should a featured snippet answer be?

Google does not set a minimum or maximum length, and it varies by query and language. A direct answer of about 40 to 60 words, placed right under a question heading, is a practical target because it is long enough to be complete and short enough to quote whole.

Can I stop Google from using my page as a featured snippet?

Yes. The nosnippet rule blocks all snippets for a page, including featured snippets. The data-nosnippet attribute keeps specific text out of snippets. A low max-snippet value can reduce featured snippets while keeping regular ones, but Google says it does not guarantee they stop.

Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema or extra requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Clear, well-structured answers and normal SEO quality are what matter.

Should I remove FAQ schema since Google limited FAQ rich results?

You do not need to. Google said in 2023 that unused structured data causes no problems in Search. FAQ markup that matches visible content still describes your questions and answers in a standard format other systems can read.
